Trying to help neighbour.Evinrude 35HP, 3-cyl model -96. Probably partly in water up to cyl one last year. carb/filter/plugs cleaned/emptied. Motor runs if I give the choke a push every 2nd second but otherwise stops. Motor runs longer if I turn the prime solenoid in position manual start but won't accept any throttle. How do I know if the solenoid is broken? What is the purpose of the soleniod? I guess I have a fuel problem, what do I need to check?

Appreciate any tips, thanks/Mats

Motor is starved for fuel. You need to check all hose, fittings filters tank. Be sure no water in tank, float bowls etc. and tank vent is open and clear.Fuel pump should be checked.Unhook hose between pump and carb carefully crank motor while holding hose in a can check for strong pulsing flow and for any contamination. If the motor was on a boat that sank water could be anywhere in fuel system.Sounds like choke is working right.
You should get a service manual try the tab at top of page or Amazon.com Barnes and Noble,EBAY
or even the library.Good luck.

Mats

Be sure there is NO WATER in vro system, or motor will be history. I would rather disengage it till you had everything fixed , the hook up again. You will have to use premix 1:50 while troubleshooting this anyway.

Clean carbs, all small holes gentle with wire.Good luck.

also make sure you clear all the vacuum lines from the power head. There is probably water in there that MUST be cleared.
