Ok so I need to figure out why my trim/tilt won't work, I have voltage going to the relay bracket and can bypass the one relay at a time having to leave one in and make it go up or down but will both in it won't do jack, so I know the wiring up the relay bracket on both side are grounded and not broken, I can bypass the relay bracket all together and apply 12v to the green or blue wires to the trim motor and it works. I just can't get the switches to work, both switch have voltage to and from. Could the relay bracket have a bad connection. Need Help BAD! I have 2 service manuals and verified time over that all connections are correct, I have used ohm/volt and test lights. My dad a retired mechanic and brother in law and we can understand what is going on. Also the tilt guage won't show the position of the engine, I have verified the connections on the guage and we pulled the trim sending unit and checked wiring there we think it might be bad but that should not have any affect on the trim working the engine.

This engine should have a trim limit switch. This switch must be working or bypassed.

Go to relay socket, the one with blue/white wire, connect meter red lead to blue/white wire. Then connect black meter lead to engine ground. Push up trim button, should be battery voltage.

Relay socket with green/white, connect meter red lead to green/white wire. Then black lead
to engine ground. Push down trim button, should be battery voltage.

Red wire in each socket to black lead should read battery voltage.

If this checks relay is bad, or loose/broke wire.

relay termials are marked and can be tested.

Not much in OEM manual about limit switch. Just look on the tilt tube.

Re: Evinrude 97 150 Tilt/Trim Electrical

I was just starting to ponder on the limit switch, i have juice coming out of the tilt switch up to the relay brackets, i can jump across the relays and the trim up and down work. So I will try to by-pass the limit switch and hope this works, it just feels like it has to be simple.

My other trouble is the trim guage, I have the white/tan wire going to the S terminal and the black/tan goes to a ground and in a round about way connects to the ground on the trim guage, should I run the black/tan directly to the ground terminal, the light on the gauge comes on, I have unbolted the trim send unit and made sure the wire are connected but when I run the arm on the send unit the gauge does not respond to the movement and constantly read has being fully trimmed down any thoughts.

One more, my oil level guage is not working or the sending unit is bad, I have ran a new wire from the send unit to the S terminal on the gauge and the guage lights up so ground is good but no response, the tank is full but guage read emtpy, maybe the send unit is stuck down??
Thanks so far.

Trim sender. disconnect wires to gauge, connect ohm meter to white/tan wire and engine ground. full up read 80 ohms, full down 10 ohms. Trim gauge, ground S termial, should read full trim.

Re: Evinrude 97 150 Tilt/Trim Electrical

This Test is with the Relay out correct. (Maybe a Stupid Question?)
On your reply to testing Voltage at the Blue/White & Green/White wires I will try tomorrow.

I have only 9 volts coming out of the trim switch on the G/W and B/W wires that feed the relay, is this correct or should it be 12 volts.

I have jumped the from Red full 12v to solid lead Green (goes to the motor) on the Relay and tilt up/down works I had to do this so I can check the tilt sending unit, but I have to have the other relay in, and vise/versa with the solid Blue wire.

How often would 2 relays be bad and can one relay be bad and affect the operation of the other relay/function. This things is frustrating me and I need to get this fixed.

Relays out. checking the voltage, should be same as battery voltage. Hot battery, you should have 12 volts. Do the relays click when you push the tilt and trim button?

No clicking, nothing just dead when i push the up/down. What about the 9 volts coming out of the up/down switch, is that ok.
Thanks

Re: Evinrude 97 150 Tilt/Trim Electrical

I just can't understand why I have 9 volts off the trim switch, they should have 12 volts, they have 12 volts going in on the red/white wire or red/purple wire.

Dirty connections. Disconnect the switch on the side of the cowling, Jumper the wires, like bypass the switch. Relays in. The red wire hot, jumper to blue trim should go up, red jumper to green should go down.

Re: Evinrude 97 150 Tilt/Trim Electrical

Thanks for all the help, I will verify the B/W and G/W bypass on the relay and try to clean the connections on the cowling switch and let you know how that goes, I hope its just bad relays. Will have to order, I don't think I can find them at a Napa or other parts store and we have no marine shop near here.
Again Thanks.

I am not sure about the relays, but you may find a match on General Motors vehicles. Sometimes you can take the relay apart, clean the contacts glue it back together.

Re: Evinrude 97 150 Tilt/Trim Electrical

I have figured out the issue, on this wiring harnes for tilt/trim and engine wire harness, it has 2 plugs that are triangle shape and will match up will I noticed how dirty the wires where and after removed some of the wrap, I had the plugs crossed, trim works perfect.
thanks for all help:)
