I am looking at a big twin 25 horse motor that has not been used much. It will match up with my stick steer. I am putting it on my 14 ft chanue. Is this a good motor or should I be looking elsewhere? Motor is a late 50's model. Any advise will be helpful and appreciated. I have been using a 9.5 Johnson on boat but it is not man enough to plane out the fiberglass boat with 2 people.

The Big Twin 25 was made 1951-55, with a major change on the '55 from it's predessors. In '56 it was boosted to 30hp, and 35hp in '57. I have seen Chanue boats but don't know much about them. I wonder about the motor weight issue.

Big Twins are good motors. 57 was an odd parts year, changes were made that didn't take and last into subsequent year models. Still good motors though. Very powerful and kinda heavy, but also very reliable. Check all the usual stuff before you buy...a test run is the best, when you can get one.

Thanks guys! It did have a 35 on it with stick steer at one time. The 25 looks heavy.

My only concern would be the fuel system and our new mix blend of fuels.I know some of the 80's engines are having difficulty with rubber parts.Im thinking of your carb, fuel pump etc.Surely there are newer parts to rectify the problem. Also those engines had a 25 to 1 oil mix. They were heavy on fuel use too compared to the more modern engines. If its cheap cheap. Its your call.Yes easy to work on,but they also have points condenders, coild under flywheel that crack and go bad at the WRONG time.

Serial # 25916-11286.
This is the serial number I was given for it. I do not have motor yet. Being shipped from New Mexico to me. If this number is correct can you tell the year made? I do not have model number yet.

If it's a '54 bigtwin 25 it should look like this. --sorry, I couldn't resist, and thought you might like a pic since you have one coming. I like mine. I mix mine 24:1 but I will have to recheck to be sure that's correct before I tell someone else to do it. I know my '55 7.5 hp actually uses 16:1 and was incorrectly thinking 24:1 at one time. It does like the gas but is not much worse than my '99 30hp johnson which likes the gas, too. If yours comes with a tiller handle and you're using controls I'd find it "interesting" (I'm looking for a tiller handle, HA HA).:)
good luck,
JBJ

Thanks for the pic, we just bought an Evinrude 25 Bigtwin but did not know the year until now, it matches our's exactly. Did you recheck the 24:1 mix, we have no idea what the mix should be. Good luck with the Tiller handle.

Just out of curiosity, because I'm thinking about getting a bigtwin, does anyone know the weight of the outboard? Thanks, and good luck with your new motor! :)

Don't know exactly, but it's between 85 and 100 lbs. My 57 Big Twin 35hp is a bear to handle alone. Get some help when you move it...wheelbarrows work wonders.

Re: Evinrude Big Twin 25 horse, yes or no?

The 1954 Big Twin manual start weights 98 lbs and the electric start is 110 lbs. Rcarr's is electric start. The original mix was 1/2 pint 30W automotive oil per gallon of fuel or 16:1 for the 1951-56 Big Twins. In 1957 it appears to change to 24:1. However, since that is using 30W automotive oil I think its safe to use 24:1 using a TC-W3 outboard motor oil.

Per the Evinrude factory service manual as revised Dec. 1960:
24:1 for all Big Twins 1951-61

I wish there was a definative answer to the fuel ratio question once and for all. It seems all my manuals and the BRP website have similar, but conflicting recommendations.
