Total newbie question. I know my 1986 30 HP Evinrude electric start is not charging. (Voltage checks) As all my other outboards were simple pull start points/condensor affairs, I don't even know what I am looking at. Is this year / size motor supposed to charge?

Re: Evinrude Charging.

See THIS DIAGRAM from the brp parts website

Electric start models are fitted with stator coils, #24, and a rectifier #6. The coil is under flywheel but the rectifier is bolted to the side of the engine.

The wiring is all done via terminal strip #4. The yellow, yellow/grey and yellow/blue wires are the AC (with yellow grey being the common wire from the two coils) Red is DC positive and the rectifier case is the negative.

The rectifier can be checked as described in the article by Joe Reeves on the ENGINE FAQs board but use the diode test range of a digital meter not one of the resistance ranges.

THIS DRAWING which shows how to connect lights to an engine without a rectifier and the circuit of the rectifier might also be of interest
