Hi all,

Problem when giving the throttle to this wonderful old motor. I have isolated it to the fact that the choke is not shutting down the carb barrels as I throttle her....wondering if this is the electric solenoid's task or if it is mechanical...there is a stiff wire on the middle carb throttle linkage that looks suspiciously like a mechanical link for the choke.....

Help
Thanks.

Start at the begining. What motor?

The choke is not supposed to work as you throttle up. Depending on what motor you have that stiff wire you refer to is what makes sure the choke butterflys dont close on acceleration.

More info please!

Re: evinrude choke

You must be talking about an early '70s 3 cylinder 65 or 70hp. They used a "spring wire" on the middle carb to make sure the choke was pushed open when the throttle was advanced. The original choke had a dual winding where it stayed at 1/2 choke as the motor warmed up. A temp sender then turned the choke off. In later years, a factory service bulletin said to put both the choke wires on the same purple-white terminal and use it as a regular on-off choke.

Thanks for the info seahorse....sorry about the lack of info....posted twice.

78 Evinrude 70 throttling up produces a dying out mid throttle that can be worked through by holding the butterflies somewhat closed, then holds her own above that throttle speed.

If you have to manipulate the carb butterfly to obtain WOT throttle or sufficient mid range throttle.... it's time for a carb cleaning and rebuild.

Bob
