Hi
I have a evinrude e8rcss 1980

She wont start at all I have tried for hours to get her to go but not even a glimmer of hope

any help would be much welcome

I have tried changing plugs including checking spark from both coils no issue there.

I then tried checking to see if the key was damaged but that looked fine because If I am correct that alters timing if its worn

I then tried using instant starting fluid to see if I could even get just a glimmer of ignition no luck there as well

I put fuel straight down the throat no go again

any help would be much appriated

Please Help Thanks
Chris

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

Hi mate I have not checked compression amounts as I do not have a gauge
but when I pull the rip cord she has most definitely heaps on both
with both plugs out heaps of compressions come out of the holes

Thanks for your help

Do u know what the compression amounts should be from each cylender

Thanks for your help

slow speed needle turn in until resistant and turn back 1.5 turn.
disconnect stop wire under coils to dis activate stop button

Hi mate
Thanks for the reply I have tried that with no luck I thought that maybe the switch was at
Play but no luck also tried the idle screw 1.5 turns still no luck...

Would you know what compression numbers I should get
from each piston I plan on borrowing a compression Gauge to try

Thanks heaps
Chris

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

at 6 bar its start easily,
at 4 bar its start with choke on and runs only with choke on,
so more than 6 is ok
test 3 puls for each hole

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

100psi per hole would be ok,.....and both holes should be within 10% of each other. ( some say 15% is ok)
are you positve you have good spark? the motor should at least give a puff of smoke or a backfire when you put premix in the plug holes. ( never use use starting fluid on your 2 stroke, stick with premix down the carb, or better yet, a few drops in the plug holes)

......you sure the motor is a 1980 8hp? looks like it could be a 1988.

Hi again
Ok I got the compression test results on average I got between 45 psi to 50 psi from each piston

both gave identical results
thanks Chris

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

Perhaps we should recap.
Is this engine new to you? Has it ever run well for you?
All you need is compression, fuel and spark.
You say you have spark. Have you tried an air gap spark tester? Spark should jump 10 mm.
You say you have compression at 45 and 50 psi. These are low numbers, but you may be still be able to cough.
Premix fuel into the cylinders at the spark plug hole should fire.
If you are sure on spark and fuel, then the compression is failing you. You may want to pull the head and covers to check the condition of the head gasket and rings.

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

like JD says, 50psi per hole isnt good, but it still could be just a bad head gasket. remove the head, and have a look at the cylinder walls, if they are pitted or scored, its a whole different story. and again as JD said what is the history on the motor?

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

Hi again

So the history of the motor is that when I bought it the
fellow told me that the carbie had died and he had removed it but had no idea
What he did with it so as I brought a carbie from eBay

So since I have owned it i have not been able to get it started
thats all I know about the history of the motor

I have tried to get the rings off the piston to change them but I
have not been able to get the block pulled apart to remove the pistons
I have Unbolted all the bolts that I can see but for some reason the
motor does not seem to come away from the casing

any help would be much helpful

with the year I'm not 100% sure on what the year it is
I only have the model number to work with which gave
me the conclusion it was a 1980 model

thanks again
Chris

Hi all
Well has been some time since I posted have been chasing parts for this motor
I have completed rebuilding with new rings and still will not start I get spark but no ignition
Is there a way to ajust timing
Cheers Chris

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

i have the same motor sitting here on a stand, as bosun asked, what are comp numbers now? if you have spark as you say, you should be able to get some sign of life if you put a few drops of premixed fuel directly into the plug holes....even if its just a puff of smoke or a backfire. ( the kill switch on those motors are notorious for causing issues)

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

This is a 1980 E8RCSS, the CS is 1980.
Johnson Evinrude year code as follows,

I.N.T.R.O.D.U.C.E.S......... I=1, N=2, T=3, R=4, O=5, D=6, U=7, C=8, E=9, S=0

You need to test for fire again, it should spark with 7/16" to 1/2" gap no less with spark tester. If it doesn't spark at that wide of a gap you have either Bad Coils or CDI or both. Bad coils (Open circuit in the winding) will fire a spark plug but not when they are in the cylinder under pressure, resistance would be too high causing the coil to spark internally, it's best to check coils with an Ohm Meter. You bought a carb on ebay, better give it a real good cleaning and make sure the Low Speed Needle isn't damaged or badly worn. Always do compression checks with throttle fully open.

Re: Evinrude E8RCSS 1980 won't start

Hi Again

Ok I have done Ohm Test with the multimeter set to 20k and I get a reading 0.69 on both coils
so I tried both coils on my 4hp suzuki and no ignition at all so if Im correct the coils are shot.

I then tried putting the 4hp coils to the e8rcss and not a glimmer of spark at all
where the original plugs at least show spark Strange
So now Im confused also the coils from the 4hp were originaly from a 7.5 so weakness shouldnt be an issue

Is there a difference between coils do they generate spark different I have not done the compression test as yet still havent got the tester back Chasing it and I dont own a spark tester as yet.....

Cheers Chris

Don't swap parts with other brand motors. Install your Evinrude Coils on the Evinrude 7.5hp motor get a Spark Tester that you can adjust and set the tester at 7/16" gap also make sure the spark tester is cliped to a good ground like an unpainted bolt or what ever and check both coils for spark pull starting the motor, if both coils fire with that gap the ignition system is ok if only one coil fires and not the other swap them around and see if the none firing coil will fire. If it doesn't fire, it's no good and you will need to get another coil, if it does fire, you have a bad CDI and will need to change it. If Both coils dont spark/fire you will want to check both the Charge Coil and Sensor/Trigger under the flywheel.
