Hopefully I'm in the right place. I am currently performing a total restoration on a 1972 Starcraft Chieftain which is a 25 foot aluminum cuddy cabin. I have made the decision to do away with the current inline 6 cyl I/O and replace with a OB on a bracket. Have already done all the research on how to reinforce the transom and hang the bracket so feasibility is not an issue.

While I have owned boats with both I/O and Outboards I have never done a conversion.

The inline 6 is 165HP 32 years old and the whole thing is tired. Have a couple of questions?

1. Is the Etec as good as the marketing material claims it to be? I like the idea of 2 cycle torque and all the claims they make on reliability. I haven't owned a 2 stroke since the 70's and it worked well but wouldn't idle for crap and was smokey.

2. The boat is light, probably 4000 lbs tops with full load of fuel and four passengers and gear. I don't need to go fast but obviously need to be able to get on plane and have enough power to make the boat do what I want in inclement weather. Looking for a recommendation on the 'MINIMUM' horsepower required to do the job. I would love for it to be the 130HP since that keeps me in the 4 cyl range.

I have had a lot of opinions on this from various folks all the way from 200HP is a must to hell yeah you could do the 130HP because the Etec is so torqey.

I post in the Starcraft forum quite a bit and the gang have been super helpful, hoping some one out here can give a logically statement around motor selection. Thanks in advance

Not sure of the HP, but I am running a 75hp E-Tec on my 2005 aluminum North River. My overall weight is about 2700# with a full 35 gallon fuel tank. With 3 aboard I can easily get 32mph at 5400 RPM under the right water conditions, which is as fast as I wont to go anyway.

Fuel economy is great. These motors are not to be compared to the older 2 cycles. I also used to own a 1980 70hp Johnson. No comparision between the two. Fast starting with the fuel injection, sounds like a 4 stroke when idling.

However if I was starting over, with all the boats I have owned, I would recommend being sure you are not underpowered as you can be putting excess strain on a lugging motor. Talk to the Evinrude people & see what they come up with. You have a lot of boat there & be sure your initial investment is right.

Yes they live up to to most if not all of their claims. I know lots of people that have them and I never hear a complaint. 130hp sounds a little light for pushing 4,000 lbs. I believe they recently came out with a new model 150hp. you might want to look at. Boattest.com has done a number of reports and tests on the Etec's. You might want to check out their site as well. You may have to join to view but it's free and all it entails is giving them your email. (which they don't give out) They are sort of a consumer reports of boats. Once every week or two they email you a single report with a bunch of links, videos and reports on all things boating. A good source of info to have in any event.

Thanks for the input.

I am going to a set of scales and see what the boat actually weighs then talk with Evinrude and see what they recommend.

Sounds like a good plan.
