I have a 1976 Evinrude 40hp model 40654a that is an extra long shaft and I need to convert it to a short-shaft. After my iboats research it looks like I will need a shorter drive-shaft and a shorter shift-shaft. I have a 1985 Johnson 40hp j40elcoB that is short shaft. Would the shorter drive-shaft in the 85 Johnson work on the old evinrude?

Try looking up the parts of both engines in a parts breakdowm and see if they are the same part numbers.

yes compare part numbers, I swappeded out an 2000 lower unit with an 87 it was about 3/4' to long i was able to cut shaft and make it work. but the previous owner/tech did a poor rebuild which is why it was available as a used lower unit. I have since rebuilt it and taested it know I have a good unit to take to Canada(lots of rock)

Thanks for the help guys. I did look up the part #'s and they are different.

Hmmm cut the shaft eh? How hard was this to do?
