Evinrude F2RCSM (older 2hp) water problem?

Hi everyone:

Been lurking for a while but now have a question. I have an old evinrude 2hp (model number F2RCSM) that used to be my dad's. I took it out the other day (first time running in a few years) and it went for about 5 minutes and died. I figured (too late) that it may have overheated because I didn't check the impeller or anything.

Took it home, took of the lower unit, put in a new impeller. Just starter her up in a barrel (thank goodness it didn't seize or anything, started right up and seemed to run great) but I didn't see any water dripping out anywhere.

Checked the cooling jacket, and didn't really even see anywhere for the water to come out of. So I took the lower unit off again, verified that the impeller was seated properly and I had the woodruff key (pin?), and put some water down the water pipe to see where it would come out. It looks like it might just go up into the cooling jacket, and then drip out INSIDE of the shaft (with the exhaust) and just dribble out the exhaust port? Does this seem right? Granted, I'm not exactly an outboard wizard, but I've had 5-6 in my life and they've all dribbled at least some water out the head. If this old evinrude really does just put the water straight back out with the exhaust, how can you verify that the impeller is working? I like seeing a stream of water coming out, makes me think things are actually cooling :)

ANy information about this motor would be great and unbelievably helpful. Thanks in advance!!

There is no tell tale on these small ones. The most you will see is likely to be a few droplets, a fine spray or just a mist being blown out of the exhaust back pressure relief port on the back of the leg. As you have decduced the bulk of the cooling water just exits with the exhaust gases.

If all is well you should be able to touch, and maintain finger contact for a few seconds on , any part of the power head except the exhaust manifold cover plate and the cylinder head around the spark plug.
Any hotter, esp if there is any sign of paint discoloration, indicates over heating.

Sometimes need the cooling jacket, in particular the channels in the cylinder head, to be cleaned out. Also the passages under the cylinder block in the top of the leg.

While the gearcase is off its a good idea to connect a hose to the water tube and verify that you can get a good water flow through the power unit.
(There is no thermostat to worry about)

Water from a tell tale does not guarantee that you have cooling anyway, just that the pump is working and that water is getting to the power head.

I guess that model number should read E2RCSM. CS are the date letters for 1980

wow, thanks for the info. so I ended up cleaning everything out (I hate just sitting around waiting for replies on forums! I'd rather do something in the meantime!) and now I do in fact get pretty good water exiting out the pressure relief valves.

So, I have one last question about those pressure relief valves, this question is unrelated to my water/cooling question (hopefully my cooling issues are fixed!). Is it okay for these to be under water? Or do they need to be above water? I have been running this little guy in a bucket, and maybe it's just me seeing/hearing things, but I feel like it runs better when the exhaust relief ports (those four small holes halfway up the leg) are out of the water and SLIGHTLY worse when they are submerged. Is this normal? Is it okay for them to be submerged or do they need to be out of the water?

Thanks so much for the information!

They need to be out of the water. Put it on a boat and in the lake and you'll see what I mean.

The motor should be mounted so that the anti-ventilation plate ( aka cavitation plate), if you can call it that, is about level with the bottom of the transom ...... but that depends rather on the type of boat..... otherwise submerged by an inch or so.
