I just inherited an old evenrude fast twin. It was my wifes grandfathers.

The serial Number is 18002CE10406

I looked it up and I think it is a 1970 18 HP but the I'm not sure its accurate becasue the number in the look up is 18002.

The engine is very clean and was lubricated and stored indoors for years and years.

Because it is a sentimental thing I really want to get it running.

So whats my first step after reading forums and buying a manual?

I have to get a compression test on it, but I'm sure it needs some work.

Thanks

Check out the Top Secret File at the beginning of this post , see the topic referencing sitting up two years or more would be a good place to start and then get to it.

Good luck and post any questions. You can not beat free, expert advice from experienced folks here on the forum.....

18002C is the model number and it is a 1970. The rest of the number is the serial number. Before you ask, ignore the "C". That is only important if there was a mid-year engineering change and you happen to be ordering the part that was involved in the change.

Thanks for the info.

I thought the extra numbers were probably model and serial together.

Now that I know the year I'll go ahead and order the manual.

I'll keep posting my status and questions.

Thanks again

Most people here will suggest the factory manual. However, if you're pretty mechanically inclined, a Seloc will work just fine, for that motor. Volume I is the correct one. Those motors are very easy to work on, so you really don't need any more than that and they are very reliable motors too. I, myself have probably fixed and sold more of these models, than any other and find them very responsive to a proper tune up.

Re: Evinrude Fast twin

Now I have a Johnson, A Mercury, and an Evenrude.

My wife isn't so sure about it and knows I hate to get rid of anything that works, so she's wondering how many motors I'm going to end up with.

It was her grandfathers motor for his old fishing boat. The boat went to her brother and he didn't want the motor so its been in her dad's heated garage for the past years. Someone has messed around with the carb but I think everything else is in good shape. Its very clean and in decent shape. I'm looking forward to working on it over the winter.

Thanks for the advise, I have a manual on the way for it.

Re: Evinrude Fast twin

I checked the compression over the weekend and I was amazed.

125 psi on both cylinders. I checked it several times on each cylinder and got 125 each time with only 2-3 pulls.

I have spark at the plugs, but no fuel.

The fuel pump is/was loose and the linkages to the carbs have been disconnected.

My biggest Question is:
Should I just buy a new carb or rebuild the one I have? The engine is very clean. Ed (my wife?s grandfather) must have winterized it years ago and I don?t think he used it much either.
I have the manual and I have read the fuel system section a couple of times. I?m thinking rebuild.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

After you get your manual, check and make sure all the linkage pieces are there. Replacement carbs aren't hard to find, but yours is probably okay...just a little dirty/dusty. They aren't hard to clean and rebuild...go slowly, work on a clean bench, lay the few pieces out the way they came off to help you put them back right. Keep us posted.

Rebuild the one you have and put in a new float also.

I had the same motor on a 14' lund a few years back. One of my favorite motors for sure..When tuned properly, it was a great unit.

Sounds like grandpa took pride and care of his stuff. I bet it won't take much to get that motor going.

Please post some pics if you can.
