Evinrude Fastwin: 10 or 18?

Hello. I have an old Evinrude outboard. The cowling/cover is marked "10(hp)Fastwin"; but, the stamped nameplate fastened to the transom bracket reads "No. 15032 - 10476". Everywhere I look the '15032' model number is listed as a 1960 18HP motor. Got any clues as to what it's all about? Thanks in advance. -Phil

check the number on the aluminum plug on the block, could be that the transom bracket was changed at some point.

There are alot of lakes with a 10 horse limit and some guys cheat by changing the hood or stickers to say 10, agee with nw, look for the welsh plug on the engine, nickel size plug somewhere on the power head, that will tell you the real story.

Very interesting. I'll find the plug and get the whole story. Appreciate the response.

IRISH, by god, you nailed it! The Plug matched the Nameplate perfectly. Someone put a 10 HP cover on an 18 HP motor. Thought it had a lot of grunt for a ten. lol.

Well there you go, that is pretty common and now you know what parts to order for it.

That would have alot of power for "10" horse.

The 10 hp cover won't fit the 18 hp. I think what they did was change the 18 to a 10. The 10 hp was called a "Sportwin" and the 18 hp a "Fastwin".

the 18 looks like a 10 on that cover. Look at it closely to see if there is a bottom circle on the 8.

Do these help solve the remaining mystery? The cover fits perfectly; and, none of the identifying features show any signs of tampering.

No question it's an 18. The decals look legit, too. Maybe a Monday morning motor?

I got it figured out. The cowling has been cut or something and the top half of the 1 and 8 has been cut off. You can just make it out in this pic. The 10 of the same year has the "0" going up into the black area...

chinewalker definitely has the answer, i put my readin glasses on, and you can see where the square was cut out in the cowl! looks like recent work too, possibly has shavings still attached to the cuts!

Re: Evinrude Fastwin: 10 or 18?

I have the same 1960 model, The guy who sold me my boat and motor thought it was a 10 hp, The day it tried it out before I bought it, I thought somthing was weird like yourself. Then I looked a little closer, and low and behold it was an 18, so I kept my mouth shut and paid the man around $300.00 less for the whole package because it was "only a 10 horse". Glad to see there are still some around. Besure to use Champion plugs only, you can only get the new style fuel pumps for it so becareful going to some dealerships. Hey I was just looking at your stern of your boat, it that an alumacraft FD?

Re: Evinrude Fastwin: 10 or 18?

I took a rag with a little lacquer thinner and removed most of that black rectangle (the one that looks like a cut-out section) where someone had masked and painted the cowling. Sure enough, the top half of that "18" magically appeared! Thanks, Chinewalker. You are quite the sleuth. Also, I noticed, in the verbage of the the old advertisement you enclosed, a suggestion to opt for an electric-start. Wish I had one. That thing is a beast to crank with a rope!

Thanks for the tips, walserjaw. Yes, it is an "FD". When I first got the rig, several years ago, I called AlumaCraft to see what info might be available. The Gal with whom I spoke was extremely helpful. She had to dig out the old (microfiche) records; and, with the ID number from the cast-aluminum transom braces, informed me that the boat was one of about six-hundred built in 1958. It's a great hull and built like a tank! She even sent along an old advertisement showing it with a covered bow; steering wheel helm; upholstered bench seat; and, a girl on skis in tow. I'd bet this 18HP was the original motor that came with the boat when it was new. She's a wonderful craft, indeed.

I agree, the boat is is tank. The gage of the aluminum is so thick. You are very lucky to have been sent anything. I tried to call them and left messages but got nothing. I recently purchased a pair of aluminum oars, extremly rare. Hey to look at the original brochures for your engine go to www.old-omc.de/. You can amost find any engine brochure there.
