I found a 1960 (I think) Fastwin 18 HP

Model Number: 150 32 B 23 11

What do you think about these old motors?

Is it worth anything in this condition, if it runs as good as it looks. I won't have a chance to test it myself, E-Bay.

It is from a motorcycle shop, they took it as a down payment, and they are playing dumb about the condition, but have all the original papers. The previous owner bought it last year at a bankrupt marina auction, they had it as a display piece in the showroom.

What would you pay for it?

Can I expect to get normal parts for it?

I will use it if I buy it.

Looks like a really nice motor to me. Not the prettiest model but a super good engine. I'd not pay more than 250 or 300 for it, less if you have to have it shipped. THat's about all it's worth. 350 if I just had to have it. Since it's at a motorcycle shop, there should be no reason he couldn't test compression on it for you before you bid on it. If it's not over 105 on both cylinders, I wouldn't get it. I'd hope it was around 125 on both cylinders. If so, it will purr at all speeds and crank almost telepathically. The lower unit is fairly easy to find parts for as is the rest of the motor. You'll probably won't get more than 300 if you ever try to sell it, even if it's running nice. It looks great to me, though. I'd like to have it and would run the heck out of it with no worries after coils, impeller, pull cord, etc. You know, the usual.
It is the anniversary model, which is neat. It has an adj. high and low speed carb, too, which I really like. The fixed jet is a pain to me.:)

Thanks a million jbjennings. :)

Thats what I wanted to hear, now if I can get some compression numbers on it, and the E-bay Gods are good to me, I'll have a new toy.

Found manuals already, and that is always a good sign. None of that guess maybe it should be like this stuff.

Cheers,
ST

Hey Snapper,
After looking again, I'm actually not sure if they upped the compression in '59 or '60. I know my '63 seems to have about 125lbs. vs. my '58 which, if I remember correctly, has about 115. The '58 is a low hours motor, I believe. I think the compression got upped a little after that but I can't remember which year. So keep that in mind when they give you the compression numbers. I'd bet just by lookin at it that compression will be fine. That motor couldn't have been used much judging by the paint on the skeg and the powerhead paint looks good, too, like it hasn't shown ANY sign of an overheat. It really LOOKS like a good motor. I think I'll bid on it myself!;)

if they will do a compression test on it and guarantee the test then take a chance, but not more than the number JB gave you. It almost looks too good. There are some rust indicators on the flywheel and other places. Might have been cleaned up to make it look that good. More than likely if it's been sitting and the coils have not been replaced they will need to be replaced.

JB, I might be wrong but wasn't 59 the Golden Jubilee Anniversary model? That grey paint looks like a 60 model. Good motors, don't particular like the cowl. I know where there two of them right now but I can't get ahold of the owners. I bought a cherry 57 18hp Johnson with a pressure tank for $275 not too long ago so that should give you some idea about what it is worth.

Yeah, CC,
I think you're right! I always get the '59 and '60 mixed up. If it was a '59 it'd have the golden jubilee on the side and a medallion, too. I'm not particularly proud of the square cowl but it kind of grows on me a little. I like how the square cowl seals. It looks like it would be nice and quiet. I noticed a little rust on the powerhead mounting bolts, too, which looks odd. I don't get that. But it still looks like a nice motor. I doubt it's been repainted. Seen some salty air maybe???
Anyway.....

That's a nice looking engine, but don't exspect to take a 48 year old engine out of the shipping crate, and go fishing with it. Magneto over haul, carb kit, water pump, possible gear case reseal, fuel lines. Those can be nice running engine's, but it is still 48 years old. Can you do the work yourself?

Re: Evinrude Fastwin 18 HP - advice please

Well thanks to all for your advice and the information you gave. Great as always! :D

I set a limit of 300 EUR or $432 that I would bid on the motor. It is a different market here and prices paid reflect that.

I lost, it went over my limit.

It sold for 456.00 EUR or $657.

I never did get the compression numbers on it, their reply was, sold as is, with the information given.

So I will just keep looking, sooner or later I will get what I want for what I want to pay. In the mean time I will just putt around with my bargain 6HP Rude motor. :D
