Hello everyone I have a few problems with my motor. I believe its a 1970 18hp fastwin. (18002E). I have a few issues so I am just going to list all of them. First off after running for a bit the gas line loses prime and the motor will stall. I am running a 50:1 mix .Second there is ALOT of oil accumulating in the barrel while running the motor. Also the motor idles smooth for awhile then will hicup and will eventually stall unless I apply more throttle. All of these issues except for the gas line losing prime are unnoticable when in gear and cruising on the pond. The motor has plenty of pep and is overall a great motor besides these issues. Please Help.
Thanks for your time.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin Help

I would get a new fuel pump or at least a kit for it. They are very cheep. Make sure the fuel lines are tight with hose clamps on the ends. Turn the low speed up a bit hiccuping means its to lean.
Usually their is oil in the barrel but how much? A lot and you could have a bad seal between the case and lower unit. But probably not.

Thanks Matt. What do you mean by turn the low speed up? Are you talking about the set screw near the throttle? If i put my hand under the exhaust outlet I can feel the oil in the water. Ive been running the boat the last couple days in the same barrel and there is a thick black oil layer. Thanks

Turn the low speed adjustment screw a little counter clockwise ( in 1/4 turn increments) until the sneezing stops. To verify it is running lean you can give it some choke (richer mix) and see if that works before adjusting but I agree with Matt that your idle is lean. I wouldn't worry about the oil build up in the barrel. My 9.5 does the same thing and I guess when your running in a confined barrel it is bound to build up. When you wipe down the leg after you'll see that it really isn't that much. Best of luck. Rick.

When it starts to die and loses prime, pump the gas line hose and see if it keeps going. If yes, then it usually is the fuel pump.

Also, make sure you have the vent open on the tank for air to go in.

When I pump the gas line hose it will keep going. I had to do that alot last season. I would be cruising across the pond and the motor would bog down. Then i would reach back and prime the ball and it would crank right back up again.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin Help

Thanks for all your help guys just a few more questions. One is where is the slow speed screw located? Can anyone send me a link to the fuel pump kit?
Thanks again

There should only be one adjustment on that carb and it's the slow speed one. near the top. Carb kits can be gotten anywhere. Your OMC dealer will have them or most aftermarket places. They are cheap and easy to find. vintageoutboard.com is one such place.
