Hi, This is my first time so here goes. I am very new to boating and cant wait to get on the water. I have just purchased a Evinrude Fisherman Six, in great condition, started on the third pull and sounds and responds great. It has been bought to be a kicker engine on a 17.5 feet open Cathedral Hull boat, so it is to be mounted on a adjustable bracket. The engine is 18 inches from the underside of the Transom Bracket to the horizontal plate directly above the prop. Is she a short, standard or long shaft ? and is it correct that the plate described above, be level with the water, lots of videos i have watched seam to have the engine mounted so as the water outlet is four inches above the water. any information greatly appreciated.

Regards Ade

Yes, you do have a short shaft motor there. A long shaft would have a section 5 inches high bolted in the mid section above the water pump area. You want the water level to be where the lower shock mounts are, or you'll risk burning up the impeller.

Cool. Friends are always welcome. Welcome to iBoats too. There's a lot of good guys here willing to help out, so you joined a good brotherhood here.

Those old sixes are excellent motors. They're based on the old 5 1/2 design that started in the 50's and they built it out of the same design from the late '60's till about '79. I happen to own a couple old 5 1/2's myself. A 1955 Johnson CD-12 and a 1958 Fisherman.

Take good care of that old 6 and it'll offer you great service for many years to come.
