I was wondering when I have the red lever on the fuel solenoid in the running position(lever points toward the VRO pump) and my motor runs fine, if I turn the lever into the opposite position my motor stalls almost instantly, why is this happening? I thought it was just for priming and once the motor was running it didnt matter which way the lever pointed.

This is on a 1987 90 HP

when the lever is in the run postion. pushing in the key activates it. when you turn the knob, you are manually priming the motor, what you are doing is allowing extra fuel into the intake, flooding the motor with fuel.

this is the run postion.

To add a little more info -- should you have a dead battery, you would normally have no way to prime (choke) the motor for a rope start. So turning the red lever to manual position and squeezing the primer bulb allows fuel into the engine. You rope start the motor and turn the lever back to the other position.
