Evinrude Gear Box help

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I recently got a great deal on an Evinrude Sportwinn 10hp. I am not sure of the year, the serial number is. This is my first outboard so I have ordered a manual, however, I was going to change the lower unit oil and the illustration I found online was misleading as to the location of the vent. On the opposite side of the drain plug is a screw that I removed thinking it was the vent. Turns out the screw had a pin on the end of it approx. 1/2" long. I cannot return this screw back because whatever the pin was on was spring loaded so I cannot line the hole back up. Ok, onto my question, if I remove the 6 bolts on the housing will this be a dificult job for me to fix? I am mechanically inclined, but this is also a marine engine. Thanks for your help everyone.

wait for your manual, before you mess something else up. that screw held part of the shift linkage in place. it's fixable and you will need a new seal for the lower unit. need the model # to tell you the year. the vent screw is on the starboard side above the av plate.

Even if you do dis-assemble the gearcase, you still have to reinsert that screw AFTER you put it back together.

Unless the internal lever has fallen out of the cradle, you should be able to get the screw in with a bit of finesse.

Look through the screw hole. Can you see the inner hole at all? If so, try centering it up with an ice pick or something. It may help to CAREFULLY move the shift lever a bit. But you don't want to jiggle the lever out of the cradle. What will help more than anything is to turn the motor upside down and let gravity hold the stuff in place.

When all else fails and if you can see half the hole aligned but just can't get the pin through it, do this: Grind or file the end of the pin to a blunt chisel edge. Then stick the pointy end in the hole and rotate it to drag the lever into place, pushing gently as you do. It'll usually slip right in.

You are only about the millionth person to have made this mistake, so don't feel bad.

Well I got everything taken care of, pretty straight forward. I also got my book in this morning after staying way to late last night fixing it. I had the spaghetti seal already so I just lowered the gear box enough to remove the old spaghetti seal and replace it, and was easily able to reconnect the linkage to the pivot pin. I took it out for a quick spin this morning, ran great, and shifted even better.
