Evinrude Gear problems

Hi,

I have a 1994 140hp evinrude outboard with some gear problems.

Half way thru the summer I lost reverse. The throttle would just rev the motor when I tried to go in reverse. Now the motor wont engage in drive unless I wiggle the throttle back and forth, and it eventually engages once it is engaged in drive it stays in. No reverse though.

I took the boat out of the water and drained the oil. There were gear shavings in the oil but nothing to significant. I purchased the boat this year and this was the first time I went to change it and it was very milky also.

So I am going to change it and change the seals on the plugs.

Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Have you tried to adjust the shift cable? By the way, those small gear shavings probably came from shifting into gear to slowly, when you shift gears, do so with a quick and firm motion. Don't try to "ease" the shifter into engaging.
