Evinrude 135 HP year: 70's

Engine starts okay, Idles okay. I go wide open and it takes about a minute to get to full speed. All cylinders have good compression, and I can see a spark on all 4 cylinders. Carbs were just cleaned and adjusted. The timing advances when it is supposed to.

Could my sparks be weak?? I said that I could see them-- but I'm not sure of their intensity. If it is an ignition issue, could it be my power pack? Or do Power packs just flat out die when they go?

Anything else I could look at??

Could be the prop if everything else is O.K.
What is your set up ?? (boat, current prop, rpm at WOT, current top speed etc.) There are some real experts out here that could help with prop selection.

Re: Evinrude hole shot

is it hesitating, or is it just taking a while to get wound up. what boat is it on. if it is an older boat is there a possibility it is water logged ( holding water in the foam, under the floor). is this a new problem or gradually coming on.

Re: Evinrude hole shot

I bought a brand new prop according to the book, also tried 2 others just to see what would happen.
The top speed is about 35 and I cannot remember the exact tach reading(last summer was the last time i was in the water). I want to say it is in the 4000 + range but I could be way off. I also ran an alternate tank of gas so I eliminated the gas as a problem.

It is a 16' Sea Ray. I'm sure the boat isn't the problem. It isn't hesitating, it just takes a loooooong time to speed up.

The Motor itself is new to us. We bought it in pieces and rebuild everything. The first time we took it out it did this. When I run it out off the water it revs fine and is very responsive. A soon as it hits the water its a dog.-----No Power I

I run a 164 Doral with a 140hp RPM at WOT is 5,400 to 6,200 depending on which prop I run. 4,000 sounds mighty low for WOT and you appear to be "lugging" your motor.
What prop are you running ????

Re: Evinrude hole shot

I'm not anywhere near the boat right now. I'm just thinking ahead trying to figure out what to try when I get it out. That RPM reading I gave was a guess (trying to think back to last year). I also tried some significantly smaller props, including one I took off our old 115. It still bogged way down. I'll get the prop #'s tomorrow, but I really don't think that is the problem. Is there any way it could be related to spark? Has anyone ever had a weak spark cause runnability problems? Like I said earlier-- I know there is a spark and I know that it is firing at the correct time I'm just not sure of the voltage. All the coils are brand new, so I know that isn't the problem. Could it be the charge coils? Or am I digging way too deep with this ignition stuff?

Thanks for the replies so far!

Re: Evinrude hole shot

Does trimming it all the way down out of the hole make "any" difference to having it all the way up out of the hole ??

Re: Evinrude hole shot

if it is slow out of the hole to get on the plane i would be putting a foil on 1st that should fix it. If that doesnt u can get wedges that go behind the motor brackets that give u that extra trim in. also check your prop there should be some numbers on it, the first number is what u should be looking at. for a 16 foot boat with a 135 v4 u should be looken at about 17-19 inch pitch prop.
