I have a 1975 Evinrude 75 Hp 3 cylinder outboard. I have just a couple quick questions. What is the spark gap on spark plugs for this engine supposed to be? And on the coils, I just replaced them but am not happy with the new ones. The spark plug wire where it "taps" into the coil, you know, where you are supposed to be able to just push them together, they don't stay. So I am going to replace them again. Does anyone know if the newer coils for this motor come in the package resined together in that spot? These ones I bought just seem so damn....chincy.

Plug gap will be .030 As far as your new coils go I'm not sure what buying new ones again will accomplish as they are all made more or less the same. Try cutting a 1/2 inch off the old wire and see if they stick better. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: evinrude ignition system questions

My problem with the new plugs is that they fall apart just from the vibration of the engine. Ill be hauling away down a lake and all of a sudden one will fall apart and I will drop a piston and fall off plane. And I've tried recutting and tapping them, I have tried glueing them, siliconing them, ANYTHING to get them to stay, and they WON'T!!!

Plus the new plugs are arcing to the block and when you touch the spark plug wire plug that goes over the spark plug, It WILL bite you HARD! But that could be the gap, I think I might be just a little to big on it.

But these new coils are sh**ty, and I have read the directions three times now, and how I have them together is how they say to put them together. So i thought if I buy the newer style ones, maybe they'll come preassembled off the coil, which means they would have been resined in during the manufacturing process.

Re: evinrude ignition system questions

I haven't bought any coils that came with the wires molded in. May be there available but I haven't seen any. Rick.
