Evinrude Lark 2 shifting problem

I have a 1960 evinrude lark 2 that I have been running in a barrel. The shifter shifts but it doesn't seem like it is fully engaging in the forward gear and whenever i rev it up to high rpms it seems like it engages and water goes everywhere. Reverse gear engages a little better but it does the same thing. Is there anyway to adjust this? The shifter just seems kind of loose. Also, if I have to take the lower unit off how hard is it and how do I do it? Thanks!

Check under the little oval plate on the leg and make sure the lower shift rod is properly connected to the coupler. The bolts in the coupler must pass thru the indents in the ends of the shift rods. If that lower shift rod is not all the way up into the coupler, it won't properly engage in forward.

I just did that today and the shifter was not even connected! I know you can try to connect through the window but I dropped the lower unit to check the water impeller too and it looks great! I will update when I get it all back together. Thanks!

Just got it back together and it shifts just like new. Forward and reverse work great, now I just have to get it out on the water:)
