I have a 1960 evinrude lark 2 and I am wondering if I should hook a 12 volt or a 6 volt battery up to it. It has electrical start and I was using 12 volts the other day and one of the wires started on fire :) I think it was touching another wire but I just want to make sure.

Those are a 12 volt system. I believe you can find the info on the starter.

Yes, be careful that no exposed wires are touching any metal.

I think they went from 6V to 12V in 57 or 58...but even so you can use a 12V on a 6V starter if you don't stay on the starter and burn it up...once you let the smoke out of those wires, it's toast.

Absolutely 12 volt. Have been using one for a couple years no problem.
