Evinrude Lark X 40HP, Model &year?

First question, hope I got this right! Serial number for my Lark X 40HP is A0038089. The model number is not legible. Can anyone help with a model number and year please.

Really need the model number, but if you can post a pic, we might be able to help.. Does it have push button shift? Lark was made in almost every year of the 60's, so kinda hard to tell..

A Lark X would be a 1968 40hp, but since hoods can get changed over the years, rickdb1boat's right - the model number or a picture would really help.<br />1968 model numbers:<br />40802, 40803<br />40852, 40853<br />40872, 40873<br /> Pic of a '68 Lark

The X is a roman numeral. The last part of the model number is definately 72A. The motor is gold. The cover is gold and cream. It is selectric shift. I assume 1968, 1969 or 1970.<br />Hope this helps.

Unfortunetly, the 72A part only narrows it down to '63-'70. Try to get a visual ID in the catalogs here. <br />I belive the gold colour only first came out in '70, so that would positively ID your outboard.

Paul is correct.If the last number is 72, it is a 1970 Model for sure..<br /><br />40072 Evinrude 1970 40

It looks identical to pictures from the 1970 catalogue (gold motor)so that would make it model number 40072. Unfortunately everyone here thinks the last three model number digits are 872 which would make it a 1968 40872. Since it doesn't look like anything from the 1968 catalogue I will settle on 1970 40072. Thank you to all who helped. I look forward to driving you all nuts over the next year or so as I bring it back to its former glory.

Hold the horses! The 1968 catalogue spec sheet shows a gold colored 40HP Lark. I remain confused.

Ah, I missed that - it looks more like grey in the page I gave you but those catalogs can be like that. Now that I look around, the '68 colour for the 40hp Lark, 55hp Triumph and 85hp-100hp Starflites is described universally as 'gold'.<br /><br />The sum of the evidence points towards '68.

Thanks Rick. You have sent me pages 8 & 9 from the 1968 catalogue. Yes my motor looks exactly the same in every detail except for the colors. My motor is gold with a gold and cream lid. The gold 1968 Lark 40 can only be seen on top of the spec sheet in the 1968 catalogue page 16. I can confirm the last three model digits as 872. So it must be 1968 as per the spec sheet photo. Wonder why they showed a grey motor in the catalogue but showed it as gold in the spec sheet? Bet they never realised how much confusion they would cause this Aussie 36 years later!

The model number is also stamped in a thumb-sized welch plug on the motor block itself... They stamp the number in two places - clamp bracket tag and the welch plug...<br />- Scott

Hi Scott. The number stamped on the welch plug is not the model number, it is the serial number.It matches my serial number exactly (A0038089). Note: 38089 is not an Evinrude model number. Thanks for your effort anyway.

Hi Grizzly, unfortunately I can not find a copy of the 1969 catalogue anywhere to see how it looks. Does your hood have a roman numeral on it? Mine is Lark X.
