My buddy had this motor sitting in his parents garage for 8 years. he said it was running when it was put away. i checked compression the top cyl=90psi
and the bottom
cyl=90psi
There isn't a telltail pee hole on this thing! There's water coming out the exhaust holes. But id be scared to run it, scince i always keep an eye out on the pee hole. The head also has discolouration around the spark plugs and after running its quite hot. How much water is supposed to come out of the exhaust? At least with a telltail you can tell how the pumps working. It runs great! It fired right up. All I have to do is spin the flywheel by hand and it starts right up.

That engine and other similar to it simply emit a spray of sorts out those small holes. When in doubt, replace the pump.

After sitting that long put a new water pump in it and change the G/C oil. There is no tell tale on it, just what comes out the exhaust holes.

I tried to put up a pic of the spark plug area that's discoloured but it won't load from my phone. I'm sure it's alright though it runs very well. Although it could use some new plugs they had some carbon on them. Runs as good as my 25 johnson.

The Lightwin has limited cooling of the exhaust plate and head. The exhaust plate will usually have the paint discolored but not the head. I'm wondering if your buddy's engine may been run lean.

What year is the engine? If it is a 1977 or older use 25:1 as the engine uses bushings instead of bearings. The water just spits out the back no pee hole and it really isn't required I just check mine every once in a while to see that it still spits. Change the water pump impeller or by the waterpump kit. The kit uses a different sized impeller because it uses a stainless cup and plate along with a new pump housing. If your housing is worn where the driveshaft enters it you will want the kit.

The discoloration is from getting hot either running full throttle all the time or a lack of maintenance at some point. My 4 has the same discoloration that you discribe and it still runs like a top.
