Just installed a new water pump kit on my 83 evinrude 25, is there a torque spec for the 4 bolts that hold the lower unit on? Should I use some type of sealant on the lower unit sealing surface before reinstalling? Thanks

Don't know the torque specs offhand, but no sealant is needed on the lower unit surface. Put some OMC gasket compound on the threads of the lower unit bolts to prevent corrosion and facilitate removal next time.

my XP150 calls for some sealant on the lower unit where the outer edge meets contacts the midsection. OMC Adhesive M, is what my manual calls for. Don't know if it's needed or not. I used some stuff called 1211 to seal mine up.

Re: Evinrude lower unit install

I tried finding you the torque spec in my clymers manual, but it doesn't go down to 25.

Here is what I can tell you...
60-70 Long motor and the 75 standard
3/8" screws are 216-240 in. lbs.
7/16" screws are 336-360 In. lbs.
V4&V6 are
3/8" screws 264-288 in. lbs
7/16" screw 30-32 ft. lbs.

I don't know if that'll help, but you could use it as a guide, if you don't get an answer. Divide in. lbs. by 12 to get ft.lbs.

That is based off of my 86 OMC manual for 60 thru V6 Models.

I was really suprised at how little torque they really took. I wanted to torque them more, but I didn't. Just use gasket sealer on all threads.

Thanks for the advice, I used Yamabond 4 on the lower unit sealing surface and just snugged the bolts...my torque wrench only goes down to 40 ft. lbs.
