If I'm reading this right, you have the gearcase off the motor and you're trying to remove the driveshaft to change the impeller? To remove the driveshaft, you'd first have to remove the propshaft and reverse gear. The pinion gear is held in place with a nut and that will keep the driveshaft from sliding out...among other things.

But that's like replacing the sparkplugs by first removing the cylinder head. You don't have to do all that. All you have to do is remove the water pump housing and the impeller will slide up the shaft.

If unable to drop the lower unit, it's probably because the steering rod is still connected -- unless this is an electric shift model. A manual would be helpful.

If it's a shift rod, there should be a port on the side of the leg that will allow you to unscrew the top part of the rod from the lower part. In addition, the driveshaft will sometimes stick in the powerhead -- requires some careful downward pressure, and maybe some taps from a rubber mallet. But be careful the unit doesn't suddenly drop out onto the cement floor.

Sometimes (rarely) the shaft is seriously stuck. I recently worked on a Chrysler that required some creativity -- including bouncing up and down on a metal plate inserted through the crack between the upper and lower housing (finally tapped the plate a couple of times with a mallet and the unit dropped -- hard to say what loosened it up.) Aluminum breaks. Be careful.

Under the bottom carburetor there is a bellcrank that actuates the shift rod. Remove the horizontal bolt from the rotating part at the top of the shift rod and drop the unit.
- Scott
