1989 40hp. I am replacing my lower unit with a new one. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips and pointers on installing it right.

Tips:

1. Buy a manual as you'll need one at some point anyway.
2. Replace the water pump.
3. If the bolts don't come loose with moderate force, apply heat to the unit before you break a bolt off.
4.Check your shift rod height before installing the gear case per the manual specs.
5. Purchase a six pack of your favorite beverage and go slow. The pros here can do one of these in 15 min. but I'm no pro.

all the above is true but when putting the lower unit back on pay special attention to the tubes that tranport the water up to the engine and get them connected properly. good luck

thanks for the replys. I have already changed the water pump. I have a book. My biggest concern is lineing up the water tubes.
