Evinrude Lower unit

I have a 1972 25hp Envinrude (25202). I just rebuilt the lower unit. I put in a new clutch dog and a new forward gear. When I put my it into forward gear it pops out of gear. I know this is common when the foreard gear or the clutch dog is worn out, but they are both brand new. Any help with this problem is appreciated.

Are you sure you didn't replace the reverse gear instead?

I did replace my forward gear, because my reverse gear looked like new. The cradle for the shift lever that came with the clutch dog fit loosly. Could the cradle be loose effect it. It has me baffled. Thanks
