I have a chance to buy an Evinrude 140. Theengine is in excelent cond overall.
The only thing I am not sure of is it has a counter rotating prop. Now for the question, does it matter which way the prop rotates? or will I have to change the lower unit to use this engine as single on my boat?

Not a problem. You may find that you're a bit more limited on prop choices, but that's it. They all push the boat, regardless of the direction of rotation.

I have a 1984 140, what year is the one you want to buy? Great engine in my opinion. If you have an older one (like mine) you may want to update the VRO or disconnect. I am going to update mine.

Check compression before you buy, make sure it is good and more importantly even across all 4 cylinders.

I would decarb and replace impeller after purchase as well.

Enjoy man!

Hi, it is a complete rebuild 1974. The person who I am buying from lost the boat, it burned on the trailer, while the engine was in for it's rebuild.

A couple things to keep in mind -- there was no 140 in 1974 and there was no counter rotating gearcase that will fit a 1974 V4. Just something to think about before you buy a c/r prop.

Thanks for the info. I am going to take a run over to the shop and talk to the mechanic and find out exactly what year it is. Friend said it was a 74

Just a bit more on the 140. I want to thank everyone who replied to my question especially Dhadly. You hav saved me a ton of money and a lot of grief.
I went to the shop and found out that the motor was a cobbled together engine . The mechanic said that all he was authorized to do was a tune=up and spring maint on it, not a top to bottom rebuild and that he personally would not recommend this motor for more than use as an anchor. Again thank you all
