Might you be refering to the YOKE? It sits inside the clutch and moves it back and forth.

TMD

Re: evinrude out of gear

Marine Doctor,
I have a 1970 18HP Evinrude. It kicks out of gear at higher RPM. I believe it is the clutch dog and was wondering how difficult that is to repair and if there is a procedure for such. I am currently an industrial air compressor mechanic and have been a mechanic for years. Also is there anything else I should keep an eye out for during teardown and inspection? Thank you for your support here. It is most valuable. I live in central Fla

Re: evinrude out of gear

Hey CATransplant, Got a couple of quick Q's for you. First, is the 1957 fastwin 18 hp the same basic design as the 68'? If not can I get an exploded view for it at the website you got that 68 view from? And the last one is, I just changed the impeller on my 57' rude and while running it in the lake today I noticed that the motor would come out of gear while trolling in forward at slow speed. The shift linkage that I unhooked in the leg is a 2 piece linkage connected by a clamp that has 2 bolts on it. Each bolt threads through the clamp and passes through an indention in the linkage shaft. My question, is the shift lever on the side of the motor the only location that I can adjust the shifting points from? Also the motor shifted fine before the impeller change.
Thanks

That website doesn't have exploded views earlier than 1968. Your 18 is similar in design, but not identical.

On the other question, if it shifted fine before the impeller replacement, I'd guess that you are off a bit on the position of the shift rod. It's a tricky deal getting that lined up just right. Take off the inspection plate(s) and make sure that the shift rod is positioned correctly, with the turned area aligned with the clamping bolt.

Thanks CATransplant, I messed with it today and checked to see if everything was ok in the leg and it looked good. So I adjusted the shifter on the side of the motor and that seems to have fixed it. It now stays in gear just fine.
Thanks

Wizard,

Good deal. Sounds like you fixed it.

OBJ,

Looks to me like someone added a new question to an old thread. Problem got solved anyhow.

Yea OBJ, I did a search and this was the only thread I found that was close to my problem but it wasn't exactly it. So I added a question to get the answer I needed.
Thanks guys
