I took the lower end off of my 1951 Evinrude Sportwin mdl 4423 3.3hp and cleaned it right up. I put it back in, started it up to see if it worked.. but my engine still gets hot and stops... what do I do???

Re: Evinrude peice of crap

First you must never call an old outboard a piece of crap, you must talk nicely to it or you will offend it and it will never respect you. :D As a pennace you must re-remove the lower unit and install a new impeller (I guess a 1951 has a rubber impeller) and massage it with grease. Then perhaps it will forgive you and not get steamed.

Yes it is. Make sure to grease it up before install.

That's the one, while the lower unit's off you might try squirting some water up the pipe with a hose, to see if there's a blockage.

It might help to put the lower unit in water also.

Re: Evinrude peice of crap

right underneath the screwdriver steering there are 3 little slits.. water comes out of them when i start the engine... but it still seems to run to hot. With the water coming out of those slits does that mean the water pump is workin? and what does the plumbing inside the motor look like? does anyone know where I can get a diagram that shows where the water goes in my 1951 Evinrude Sportwin 3.3hp mdl 4423.?

I do run the lower unit in the water, but after a minute or so it is so hot I could fry eggs on it. I put a water hose in it and blew to get the water circulating in it. It seems to work now. But after putting it all back together and trying to start it.... my recoil broke... Its just one problem after another with my old girl.

Re: Evinrude peice of crap

The problem is pointed out in all that you just wrote.

Seems that you are not sure what an impeler(rubber thing) looks like. Than you say that you took it apart and 'cleaned it right up'. But then you ask if there is a diagram somewhere for this. This tells me you took it apart not quite knowing what you were doing or what to look for or fix.

Now you say that it was running and it just stops after getting very, very hot.

Now your recoil is broke and you can't start it.

WELL, this simply tells me that you have probably seized up something in the motor or the lower unit. Or both!

These old Evinrudes are GREAT motors that just keep on going. Calling it a piece of crap only tells me that you did not do the research needed before the work began.
