Well, I've hit the end. The previous post was...
Subject changed due to length

I think I've taken all the suggestions that were OK for my limited budget, and here's the test...
index.3.gif

Top end is 31.0 @ 5520 with the kids on the bow. Transferring 180 lbs to the stern gave 32.3 @ 5630. All planing speeds were taken with the trim just below porpoising.

1985 14’ McKeeCraft, new model states 665 lbs
Model: E60TLCRE, 1984 60HP Evinrude
SS prop: 11 ¾ X 17 with a slight cup
Tilt and trim is CMC PT-130 aftermarket, 6” setback

What I’ve done…
Replaced plugs with Champion plugs, QL77JC4
Installed Boyesen reeds and readjusted (+0.02” low speed jets)
Rebuilt carbs
Carefully went through idle and timing adjustments
Replaced fuel tanks and all gas lines
Replaced t-stat and cleaned front water jacket
Installed tinytach (neat!)
Taught daughter to use palmpilot (not as bad as I thought; may be her Christmas present)

I have two remaining problems…
1. Erratic idle. Adjusted on ears to 800, would die in water. I had to run the idle timing screw all the way in. I may have opened the carbs a bit, but back on land, it idled at 2120! I didn’t check the timing on the water.
2. Performance. I didn’t hit 6000 like OB mentioned, but I couldn’t find WOT for my engine. It seems unlikely that an extra 400 RPM would give +10 MPH, though.

Comments and advice are appreciated, in advance!

You are just under 15% slip. Thats not great but it certianly isnt bad.

What about X dimension? have you played with that at all?

Good luck!

Re: Evinrude performance

Just wondering if a pin hole in the fuel pump diaphram could be causing problems.I think it would cause rough idle and possibly wet plugs.
Another possibility a small exhaust leak under the hood. Would have to be real small just enough to cause rough idle and dilute the air enough to reduce power slightly.Try running without the cover.
I think I would raise the motor until prop ventilation becomes a problem then lower just enough to stop ventilation.
Some Fiberglass boats absorb water and thus gain weight. Have you weighed the boat?
Have you checked the bottom for irregularities?

DHadley -

What's my gear ratio?

X dimension appears OK. Pulling a tuber in a tight turn I get a bit of ventilation. I have a Doelfin. I might raise it a notch over Christmas.

I have two more holes of 'up' at about 3 cm each.

steelespike -

Over the holidays I can run it cowl-less, given a flat day. I forgot to mention rebuilding the fuel pump.

Any ideas about low/excessive idle? I really had the timing stop all the way in when in the water. +1400 RPM is quite a bit!

Got too enthusiastic...

The bottom is clean, but not waxed. The boat has accumulated some water, but still floats. I haven't weighed it, but will.

Re: Evinrude performance

Have you checked/changed the thermostat/pressure relief? Motors amy not idle properly if not at proper operating temp.

SoLittle -

I replaced the thermostat, cleaned and reinstalled the overpressure valve. The thermostat was stuck open, so I had constant flow before. The heads don't seem any hotter after a good run, though.

Re: Evinrude performance

Jim,Im just going to stab in the dark because you have done a lot.How about the crank seals?
I think that would mess with the idle and top end.
Also if the intake is sucking air somewhere it would make it difficult to control the idle.
Have you done the syncronization adjustment if
any. Have you tried to advance or retard the timing while at speed. You might be able to carefully give it a nudge either way without actually loosening anything just to see the reaction.
