Hello , I have a 1990 120 hp evinrude and I want to check my timing .I was wondering if I could use any kind of piston stop to do the timing on my evirude or do I need to purchase the omc piston stop tool?

ANY type of piston stop will be fine. While it's more difficult you could even just use a dial indicator. All that matters is that you're able to precisely tell the location of the piston at an arbitrary distance both before and after TDC.

I hate to point out the obvious here but, While using some sort of piston stop ( bolt, piece of copper soldered onto end on spark plug, your friend sticking his finger in there , etc.) and then rotating back the other way and marking the flywheel again of course exactly between the two points is zero degrees. The bad thing here would be rotating the engine backwards as the water pump may be damaged if the impeller vanes change direction from the original set. In short, the water pump may not work anymore from doing this.I would strongly suggest dropping the lower unit before turning the engine backwards .
