Re: evinrude rebuild

When number 3 was measured with a dial bore gauge, what did it measure? How out of round was it?

The most important thing is -- do you know why it "fried" 1 and 2?

Good luck!

Not sure on the dial. Machine shop said that .030 would do it on 1 and 2, 3 ok.

I believe that it was the carbs. They were pretty bad. Read on the forum about the #2 running lean. Contacted local dealer about bulletins, they would not relinguish any info other than bring the motor in and we will fix it

any other info will be helpful
Rvfireman

Re: evinrude rebuild

There were no bulletins on #2 running lean in the mid range. Its just something we figured out. There are several bulletins out about that series of motors concerning water pumps, tattle tale relocation, hi-speed jetting etc.

If the machine shop said #3 is good that means they measured it. We hope. Ask them for specific numbers measured at 90 degrees, top and bottom (4 measurements).

Personally I would only go to .020 if possible so you have room left in case something else happens.

What spark plugs?

Good luck!

Re: evinrude rebuild

Thanks Dhadley,
I have been reading the forums untill I am cross-sided.
What should the compression be on the 60hp?

The #3 had 90, I'm thinking of boring all cyc.
The machine shop said that .020 would not clean it up on the other 2, had to go to.030

I'm going to rebuild the carbs also, new water pump, thermostat, and anythink else.

The upgrade on the cooling also. I am not sure, but is the upgrade the hose on the pisser. If it is mine is on the lower side to the front of the motor on the cooling plate.( T style fitting )

I found some bulletin #'s on this on a 1990 model on this forum. Would they be the same for the 1993?

What spark plugs were you using? What grade fuel?

Re: evinrude rebuild

Good choices.

If #2 is the worst its usually the lean in the mid range issue. If #1 is the worst its usually a cooling related issue (make sure you dont have one of the 3 blade impellers).

If you were out enjoying the ride and were cruising in the mid 4000 range when it happened, its probably related to the lean issue. In the mid range you are running on full timing advance but little fuel. The combustion temps go up and pretty soon the piston expands to the point it "sticks". The middle cylinder on the 56 inch motors runs a bit warmer than the others so it usually goes first.

Hope that helps!
