Gotta 67 60hp sportfour (v4) that i've been chasing probs.

Engine bogs WOT, rebuilt carbs twice, new gas lines, plugs rotor, cap and wires, points and condensor, H2O pump and lower unit seals, rebuilt fuel pump, all new lines with that also.

I'm wondering if my reed vavles were not working right then maybe they could be the cause of my frustration?

Hi If you rebuilt the carbs and didn't see the reed valves, maybe they are the problem. There located behind the carbs in the intake.
steve

i didnt see them at all, thus leading to my confusion. my carbs sit atop two intake wholes that bend to the back and into the engine, i thought that they would be behind that peice. I can see a piece of metal maybe and inch thick sandwiched inbetween the block and the piece that attaches to the carbs, is that it?

Would a broken reed cause a boggin problem?

chekc your point spacing
on my 77 115 johnson, i had a bent reed, and i had blow out thru the carbs....maybe it's more electrical than it is mechanical
just a thought

Thanks archangel, but that was top of the list on my triple check list, i had replaced the points and set them, then i reset them to make sure, they are at .020" which is what the book and several iboat experst suggested in posts relating to the same topic. those reed valves are one of the last things in the fuel/air intake that i have not addressed at all which is what's leading me to them now.

Bad reeds would affect low speed operation first and worst.

High speed bog is often a link 'n' synch problem.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB, i had hoped you would chime in with your expertise. I did the link and synch several times thinking that i had not been able to get it right, but everytime there is no change, Low speed operation is not the best but i can keep it running if i pay attention to it, trolling would not be possible as it would die.

check to see if you have exhust blockage, even though it bubbles in the water , it still might have too much back pressure forhte idle to overcome. again, just a thought.
my 77' 115 johnson sat for 10 years beofre i got it and i had nests in every little hole you could imagine. i'm currently tracking down my personal idle issue. with new power head (rebuilt) new fuel line/pump, new gas, good oil mix and new impeller and verified good reed valves, i'm left with wondering it my appilcation has an idle bleed screw maybe i over looked, we'll be doing that today...
again, just a thought

If I were working on a engine this age, my first task would be to pull the cylinder heads, and exhaust cover. The oil's used back when this engine was new, were not the oil's we have today as far as preventing carbon build-up. You will see that if you pull the heads, and exhaust cover. I would not trust a compression reading on this engine. With the exhaust cover off, you can inspect the rings for sticking, and look at some of the piston condition. If the rings are carboned up, and stuck, you will never get that engine to run properly. I would make the above checks before spending any more time, and money. A broken reed is quite rare. If one were broken, you would see fuel blowing back out the carb throat at idle.
