Hi guys,

I have an Evinrude Fastwin 18hp (1967). I decide to replace some part on it and make it like a new but I have some problem in reassembling the power head.
My question for you is: When reassembling the connectin rod cap to the connecting rod with two bolts, do I have first to fix this to parts and then to turn and fix the bolts or the cap will go to it place by just fixing the bolts?
I made this qestion beacuase, before I fixed the bolts without placeing the cranckshaft I realize that there was a little gap on bearing surface.

So, will a connecting rod cap go to its place and form a round surface for bearing by just fixing two bolts?

Re: evinrude repair

Boso.... I don't fully understand the question, but I think that you're saying that the connecting rod cap doesn't fit the rod as it should.

The connecting rod is manufactured in one piece, then the cap is broken away from it. This results in having a cap that will fit that particular connecting rod and will not fit any other connecting rod.

With the connecting rod off the engine, and with the rod and cap in your hands, notice that on one the side of rod and cap there is a small protruding point of sorts.... a small dot sticking out so to speak. Those protruding dots must absolutely match up so that when the cap is pressed against the upper portion of the rod, the joining portion of the two disappears so that it appears to be one piece.

The cap must be from the same rod for that line to appear to be one piece. DO NOT attempt to mix the cap with a different connecting rod as that will bring about disasterous results.
