Hi guys I have an old pontoon boat that I have been playing with for about a year or so. I just spent 800.00 getting the carbs rebuilt and a lower unit replaced, tune up etc. The motor ran great at the shop and has good compression. This motor has been pieced together with 115 and 135 parts. I went to rewire the ignition switch and blew a fuse over the solonoid a few times but got it right after getting the right diagram, but now the engine is sputtering will hardly idle and i have to choke to keep it running but even doing this makes the engine race. I am a first time boat owner so dont laugh but I did use 50:1 oil with a gallon of gas just to get the switch wired and I added justa lil oil to keep from frying anything. I pulled plugs which were replaced a couple of weeks ago they were quite black and oily. Would the plugs make it that sick?? this thing is really missing bad I am going to change them out and try again. I am wondering if I might have burnt something up like the powerpack or rectifier when I kept popping those fuses. I do have the manual but this is a frankenstein motor it has parts from the 70's, 80'S and 90's. So have a laugh and shoot me a reply if you have any positive comments...

Start with the basics, compression, spark and fuel delivery.
mix fuel 50:1, 1 pint of oil to 6 gallons of gas.

Can you explain that in more detail?
What do the oil and the switch have to do with each other?
What is a "lil oil"? Was there some reason you didn't add the "correct" amount of oil?

Re: Evinrude running rough

I just mixed the gas a little rich as a precaution not to fry the pistons. I crossed a couple of wires putting the new ignition switch in and it popped the inline fuse that is located above the solinoid a few time before i got it right and I was told that I might have burned out a "diode" in the powerpack that would make the engine run rough. I also hooked the gray wire coming from engine to the tach and I cooked it as well. The carbs were just rebuilt and this thing was running like a top until I messed with the wiring and fuel. So if 50:1 oil for a chainsaw or small 2 stroke engine is ok just to crank on the muffs then I might have just fouled the plugs when I added the extra oil to the gas and it was a very small amount.

Did you check spark and compression, what did you find?
