Evinrude selectric shift Starflite IX

Looking for help. Model # 80793 R, Serial # E03331. I do not know what year this engine is. I just purchased this Starcraft boat and the engine runs but will not shift in either gear. Can someone tell me how this system works so I could attempt to diagnose the problem. Thanks

That's a 1967 80 hp

Two clutches operated by solenoid coils

Can I apply 12v to each wire supplied to the coil and see if the prop turns in each direction and that would tell me if the problem is there or maybe in the control.

If you apply power to both wires at the same time, it will break the lower end if it is running. One wire is for forward, one wire is for reverse. No power is for neutral.

That gearcase uses Type C lubricant instead of the 80-90W that manual shifts use.

I just picked up the same motor last week, minus the control box. Have you had any "good luck" getting yours running? Our serial number is EO2637. Any thing you can tell me that you have had to find out the hard way, would be much appreciated. The guy told me it would run if I poured gas in the carb. I have a 15" Boston Whaler I'm putting it on. I haven't figured out what I need for it yet. It is a project. Any reply will be appreciated. thanks.
