I just inhereted an old evinrude sportwin and am wondering if anyone can help me with some really basic(too basic) questions. First, I can't find a model number anywhere on it, from various websites and photos i think it is around the 1947 era. Any idea where I could search for a model number on one of these?

Secondly,
On the lower gear housing, there is a screw which is labeled "grease", and on the instrucitons above it says to use only evenrude grease. Do they actually mean grease...or should I use a gear lube on this one. It looks like it previously had a thicker grease in it, which throws me for a loop.

Thanks!

I'm not sure on that particular model, but most of the pre-war outboards used grease in the lower unit because they didn't have good enough seals to keep water out. They need to be checked often for that reason.
