Hey guys,
I have a 88 Evinrude 115 hp motor.
Lately the starter has been making this awful squealing noise when I crank it. I took it to my mechanic and he said nothing is wrong with my starter. He said put some oil on it. Tried this and did not help. Oil can't get to the problem I guess.
Do I need a new starter? What kind of repair is necessary?
Any advise will be appreciated.
jimpittman

Hi, Jim.

I wonder how the wrench determined that there is nothing wrong with your starter.

You could have a dry bearing in there. I would take it out and spin it up on the bench to see if it squeals there.

Long shot possibility is the alignment of the starter motor with the flywheel making the noise at the Bendix-ring gear interface.

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

The rubber clutch inside the bendix could be worn, oily, or slipping causing the squealing sound. Watch the bendix closely while the motor is turning over (remove kill switch) and see if you see any "smoking" from it.

jim don't know about the starter, but if your mechanic thought oil might help, and left you to try it,you do need a new mechanic. He's got oil.
If the starter seems to 'groan' as it stops, probably the bottom bushing is dry and needs oiling. You can do this yourself, but why not take it to a rebuild shop and have it gone thru?

DHP

Thanks for the replies.
I had the feeling that the mech was putting me off and I also felt I should take it off for a pro to fix.
I was just hoping that one of you had a magic fix.
Thanks again.
You have been a great help.
jimpittman

jimpittman

If it's not a starter issue then it's the bushing where the starter sits in, that is the culprit.
It should take about half an hour to replace with the right tool, otherwise if the bushing is welded the mecanic won't have the choice than to cut it out .
This is a $5.00 piece,it happened to me last summer, but mine was stuck and it took 1 1/2 hours to remove.Just make sure the mecanic puts some grease in the bushing.
Good luck!

Re: Evinrude starter makes awful noise starting

It was the bushing that was dry and worn out.
Cost me 48.50 to have mech take it off and fix.
OK now. Thanks for the help.
jimpittman
