Evinrude/Suzuki Trim Unit Problem

I'm working on a 2001 Evinrude 70Hp 4-stroke and it keeps puking trim fluid out when it's lowered. Its coming from the base of the reservior. I replaced the O-ring and I see no flaw in the reservior. It looks to me like the fluid is filling the reservior to the point where it's just expanding the plastic reservior kinda like a balloon and pushing the fluid past the O-ring. The fluid is only filled to the level/fill hole with the unit fully extended. Any less and it doesn't fully extend. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a known problem with this reservior doing this?

Re: Evinrude/Suzuki Trim Unit Problem

I think my partner in grime figured it out. One of the 2-stage trim/tilt ram seals must be leaking, and since the reservior surrounds the trim/tilt ram combination, it's overfilling the reservior. With no place to go as the motor trims down, the excess fluid is being forced past the base O-ring due to the expanded shell of the reservior creating a gap. The trim/tilt portion is not servicable, so now we get to break the news to the customer that it's not a cheap O-ring but an expensive trim/tilt ram unit that needs replacing. Sucks because this is one of the guys that taught my brother how to build and restore wooden ships. :(

I'm having the same exact issue with mine same year and HP. The shop said I need to replace the manifold assembly. Is this the same thing you are talking about?

Start a new thread. This one is from 2007, and is about a completely different problem. When you start the new thread identify the engine and describe exactly what your problem is. Piggybacking on old threads won't get you an answer.
