evinrude tilt trim reservoir

have a '91 40 hp vro. tilt trim was not working right so added fluid. Motor runs but No joy on raising or lowering motor.

took drain plug out to drain old fluid and replace with new and a small piston with O ring and a football shaped thing with a key on either end popped out of the drain hole. I do not know what direction they go back in. Help!

go here, look up your motor, t n t. enlarge and maybe you can tell. diagrams

once you get it back in. have someone operate the tilt switch, they push up, and you lift motor all the way up, lock motor there, fill pump, and replace plug. lower motor, and repeat until the motor goes all the way buy itself. then run up and down about 5 times.

Great help. Now I know that I shot a spring and check valve across the driveway as well. Time for a search party. thanks for your help it was perfect.
