Evinrude tilts up bot not down???

I bought a boat last night for the 81 evinrude 115 that is on it, when checking it out the trim raised up perfectly, the cylinder and all the trim components cosmetically look like new, but when I went to lower it, it wouldn't do anything, no clicking no nothing, but like I said raises perfectly, what should I check, the only thing that seemed a little sticky was the actual tilt trim button on the throttle handle but even after pressing it 100 times it would not engage to lower the engine. I am going to work on it tonight, but am not sure what to look for or what to do to rule things out, and locate the problem, actually couldn't figure out how to get into the switch on the handle??? does the handle come apart??

Thanks

Before tearing the handle apart check for voltage at the down relay. Do you hear any clicking noise when you try to lower it?

No, no clicking noise, after the motor set all night in the up position this morning it had dropped a few inches and I hit the button right back up it went but still no noise or nothing when I try to get it to lower.

if you had some help with a volt meter, could you test for power at the down relay? if power is there but it's not engaging, it may be your relay. if no power at relay, then look at the switch on the handle

Somewhere between the switch and the solenoid box is a plug. Unplug it and using a heavy paperclip, cross the wires two at a time. I am pretty sure the blue and green wires are the up & down (might have them backwards) with the third wire being the "hot" wire. If it works from here then you know it is the switch. If it still only goes up, but not down, then you know it's somewhere else...

Re: Evinrude tilts up bot not down???

I dont really wanna reccomend this, but yes the handles come apart, and in saying this also know that I have busted the plastic on a few of them as well. If you're very careful, you can get it apart, then re glue it back together. There will be 3 wires in it, a blue (up like the sky), a green (down like the grass) and a "hot" or power, which will run to both. I doubt there is any problem in the handle, since they can be difficult to get apart and probably havent been fiddled with, but it will rule that out. First thing rest the motor on the trail lock and check the fluid level. Install a pressure gauge in the first hole (nearest bow) below the trim motor. IF there is no pressure reading, check tilt cylinder lines for external leaks. Remove tilt cylinder & pressure check for leakin tilt cyl. valves. If you get a pressure reading approx 1500 psi, check passages and oil lines to tilt cyl. for blockage. Check tilt cylinder for binding movement. Also if you rest the motor on the trail lock and remove the lower oil lines from the tilt cylinder and plug outlet, then remove the trail lock , if the motor drops steadily, this indicates that you have valves leaking. Also make sure you test your battery as well, and that its strong, all connections are good. The best advice i can give though is to get a manual, it will direct you step by step to fixing the problem with diagrams which make is very easy. Gl and hope you get it fixed.

Re: Evinrude tilts up bot not down???

Well for a little more history on this I bought it from a friend and it worked flawlessly up until yesterday when I bought it from him, it sat for two years prior to him setting it outside for sale this summer. I really believe it is an electrical problem this unit looks like new, no leaks no stains, no rust nothing it is really spotless. And it sounds perfect when raising, and after I raised it last night it hasn't drifted down more than 1/4 of the distance in 18 hours. The relays you guys talk about are they in a seperate box near the engine or actually in under the cowl???
thanks

Follow the wires from the TNT through the transom into the boat, I believe on yours, not 100 percent, there will be a little box with a screw down top on it that the solenoid is located in.

Re: Evinrude tilts up bot not down???

when you find the relays, switch them and see what happens,if you get the opposite result you have 1 bad relay,if that dont work be sure to check all connections for corrosion that pertain to tnt, chinewalker has a good test with the disconnect from the switch

Yup it has a black box near the transom, I didn't get to work on it last night but will this weekend hopefully, also borrowed a manual so that should help. I should have more questions come monday...LOL!!! hopefully it is a wire or a relay something simple for once would sure be nice.
Thanks again guys

mikesea was talking about chinewalker's previous post on this thread. Post #5 here is what it said.
