Evinrude to Mercury Steering conversion?

I am considering replacing my 1996 28 Evinrude with a 2005 60 Mercury ELPTO. The boat is a 16 Pro-Alaskan, aluminum.

My current steering system consists of a single cable with a stainless rod that passes through a housing in the front of the motor bracket which then connects with a swing rod that attaches to the front of the motor.

Can I expect to be able to use the same system on the Mercury? If not what are the things I should watch out for?

Should bolt right up, you will probably need to purchase the proper "swing rod" from Mercury though. The cable should fit right in the tilt tube.

Thanks for the replys. I haven't decided on whether or not to make the change. There is a lot of money involved and I am a simple poor retiree with a kid still in college. I might have to wait until the 96 dies.
