Hey gang...I'm baaaack!!!:D My 'Rude is at it again.....no spark. Is there anything peculiar on 'Rudes, regarding spark that I need to know about? Mine is a '74 85 hp (85493-b). It's got (I believe) capacitor discharge igniton. I have one coil for each plug. I don't think I have points. I've had the flywheel off to inspect the stator/coil charge assembly but realized I don't know how to test the assembly nor what to look for (volts, ohms) anyway. So my conundrum is....why no spark? Plugs are new, gapped properly, plenty of fuel available (no flooding). Plugs are wet from cranking so I know the cylinders are getting fuel. If I let the plug wires sit on the plug just enuf to make contact, and crank the motor over, no spark anywhere on either of the 4 cyls.. Battery is fully charged and tested good. Any ideas?? How do I test the coils for proper resistance? Ohh...and one more thing...I found a used '74 85hp engine block, same as mine, in fact identical for short $$. Documented 275 original hours. Motor was parted out due to rusted engine chassis and lower unit damage. What gets me is...the motor is gold in color. My engine is such a dark blue it looks like it's black. The paint peeling off my block is very dark blue as is the rest of the motor and chassis. Was gold the original color? I ask cuz the paint UNDER my peeling paint is actually goldish. Anyway, if anyone can help me with my "no spark" issue, I'd appreciate it. Thanks alot.

Yes gold was a factory color for several years, I bought a lower off Ebay that was gold but my engine is a light blue.

You really need to get an OEM manual if you expect to have any chance of fixxing this motor.

It will tell you exact test procedures for your motor to find the problem and most of the parts involved in the ignition are very expensive so you don't want to play parts roullette until you find the right part, get a manual, do the test, find the problem.

I do have a factory manual for it. It's sort of like a Clymer's book but it's for Johnson/Evinrude and specific for my engine. Guess I'll be a bookworm for a few days lol. Is there a factory ENGINE wiring harness available for this motor?

Re: Evinrude troubles.....again!!!

Ok...so I removed the stator assembly and tested the charge coil all the way to the power pack. I have 161.40 ohms on one side and .01 on the other. Not sure what that means but that's the reading I got. My DVOM has an attachment for the spark plug leag so that it can provide RPM readings. When I connect that attachment to a spark plug lead (cyl's 1 & 3) and crank the engine, I get readings varying from 285 to 350 when cranking. NOTHING on the other side (cyl's 2 & 4). Any ideas people?? Thanks
