I have tried everything almost to get this motor running. I was told it was running but never saw it run. So at first I got it running on muffs. I thought great it does run. Got to the loch and she was a nightmare to start. Got towed to my pontoon and did some prodding. With help from a few kind folks on here I tried everything to get her running. I found that she was only sparking on starboard bank. Thos was resolved by buying a new CDI. Once it arrived from the US put it on now I was getting spark on all 4 pots but still ran like a bag of nails. So I attended to do a link and sync only to find the timer base was stuck. So after free it that. She still runs very rough and hard to start. I have a video of how she runs.
Things I have done.
Compression test 125 psi +/- 1 psi across all pots.
New CDI so getting spark
Cleaned out carbs found that some one had unscrewed both main jets for the port side ????
Re adjusted floats.
Attempted to do link and sync but cant adjust timing at idle as a nut/adjuster is missing (hopefully the timing is good and not been messed with.
I am at the boat just now so can follow any advice in almost real time.
have a look at the video and see if you guys can figure out what's happening

Are you sure you have the right jets in the carbs since someone messed with them? If your spark does not jump a good 1/2 inch with a bright blue snap then it is not strong enough. Get an open gap spark tester and use it. The are only about 10 dollars here in the states.

OK so Spark is jumping the gap, I can get her to rev when not in gear but the idle is up and down. Splutters and then builds to runs smooth for a second then back to spluttering and building up. When the engine is in gear i give it a rev and it wont take the throttle it just dies under load.It will rev freely albeit rough when not in gear. At the end of my tether here.

Checked crankcase compression?------Mark flywheel for TDC for each cylinder and see where it is firing with timing light.

A bad nozzle gasket will make it act like that...it looks like a thick washer (orange color on mine) and seals the emulsion tube to upper carb body. They get compressed too much and won't let enough vacuum happen to suck fuel. I have an 1986 omc with 1991 carbs and those have to be changed EVERY time a bowl is pulled or problems happen.

Thanks Racer will do one question though how do i check the compression in the crankcase ? I will make a piston stop tool and check timing next time at the boat (Saturday hopefully)

Yep, I chased this problem before finding it but would check your specific carb to see if it uses those gaskets. Pulling a bowl will tell the story. If it does they can be ordered without buying the whole carb kit. Good luck.
