I'm a doctor, not an engineer but I love to service my engine by myself.
I have bought a second hand Evinrude V4 140HP year 91-94 (not sure). I have found a problem with 3-way connector with built-in one way valve located near gear rod screw. The 3-way inlet side (arrow marked flow direction) was split from the 3 way body.
1. What is the function of this 3-way connector with builtin one way valve.
2. If it was split sometime before I discovered this, the engine will be damaged ?
3. What is the part number of this

Another question: What is the part with a red small lever ( look like a stop valve or switch or adjusting lever ) located below the auto lube - gas mixer pump ?
Thank you very much. Soon after I receive my CLYMER's service manual for my engine, I may ask fewer question !
Pannet

Re: Evinrude V4 140 HP 1991-1994 problem

To identify the model year, look at the model number - for example, E140TXERC would be an Evinrude, 140 hp, T = power trim, x = 25 inch drive shaft, ER = model year (94) and C = the production run. To determine the exact model year use this formula I=1, N=2, T=3, R=4, O=5, D=6, U=7, C=8, E=9, S=0 - so EI = 91, CD = 86, you got the idea, right?

The 3-way connector you're describing sounds like it is part of the recirculation system, get whatever is broken replaced - it can damage the engine in its current state.

The red lever thing is part of your engines primer system (for cold starting) it replaces the old-fashioned choke plate. The red lever should point down the length of the solenoid body. If yours has a schrader-valve (like the air fitting on your auto's tires) that is used for injecting engine tuner (a de-carbonizing chemical) or for injecting fogging oil when putting the engine into long-term storage.

-John

Re: Evinrude V4 140 HP 1991-1994 problem

Thank you very much John. The information is very useful for me. The Red lever is now pointing horizontally. If I rotate it down ( vertically ) and start the engine, do I need to rotate it back to horizontal position after the engine is successfully start ?
Another question: Someone told me to remove the 2 water thermo valve because in Thailand the temperature is high and might not need this valve. On the ortherhand if the valve not function ( not open ) the water may not circulate resulting with overheat to the engine.
Thank you.

Re: Evinrude V4 140 HP 1991-1994 problem

You should not normally have to move the valve. If you had to rope start the engine while it was cold, you would need to turn the valve so the red lever points over the cap. And yes, once the engine is started it must be moved back to its original position or the engine will flood-out with fuel and stall.

I don't believe in operating outboard without thermostats - the engine MUST run at a specific temperature or it will not completely and efficiently burn the fuel. This will cause carbon to build up in the combustion chamber and in the piston lands & grooves and around the piston rings - Enough carbon build up will eventually cause other serious problems. If you are not experienceing overheat problems my suggestion is leave them in - If you're operating in salt-water, they should be serviced every year. If signs of corrosion develop on the thermostats, replace them. I don't have any experience in dealing with motor overheat problems in tropical climates, although I did once meet a tech from the Philipines who said the same thing about removing the thermostats. I asked him what temp the motors ran and he swore up and down they ran as designed. So, I will defer to your local technicians judgement. Ask around your in local boating community to find a reputable and trusted competent technician (if you don't already know one) - that's probably your best bet.

-John
