Just tore down my evinrude VRO110 for the third time with a overheat alert. Took the theros & impeller both to the dealer here in south Texas. Both looked great. I told them the story of how we tore the heads of replaced the the deflectors, cleaned the heads, went back with new thermos & impeller only to be overheated again. The mechanic told me he has had some problems along the same line with the same motors coming back over and over only to be frustrated like I am. He said that down here in the south we deal with mud, grass & brown tide clogging up our motors. he said that he learned from another old salt to get rid of the thermos by cutting them just behind the housing and reinstalling them so that there will still be some back pressure. Because we took them out only to find that when we started the SOB up we had no H2O preasure. So I havent quite finished this one up because it gets so hot down here in the afternoons but will finish this week and let yall know how it gos. has anyone done this with any luck. So please post so I can know if I am on the right track. Thanks

Re: Evinrude V4 88-110 '89 overheat

while I dont reccomend cutting off the poppet I do recomend venting them if not already done. the factory BRP ones need a small notch cut from the poppet, also I usually enlarge the vent hole in the t-stat holder to 1/8" or so. I have also seen corrosion collapse the water tube where it enters the powerhead adapter. you also have to ensure the passages in the exhaust housing are clear as well as between the V banks. but the t-stats and pressure valves are there for a reason. I try not to re-engineer something that worked for 30 years or so. saltwater mud and sand are terrible things :)
