I've been given a 20' deck boat (home made) that has a 40hp Evinrude VRO. The model number indicates an '89. No battery or gas tank on the boat, but hand turning the flywheel indicates motor is not seized. Oil pump has been plugged most likely on purpose.Steering cable will need work also.

It ran 2 or 3 years ago (according to the owner) It has about 30 hours and 5 years since an overhaul. I intend to get a manual once I get the thing in my yard, and I decide if it's worth keeping. I feel like I can, at least, save the motor and trailer

Where should I start on the motor? I know plugs and things like that will need replacing. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help :)

ccbnew2boats,

You can just about bet that the carbs will be fouled. They will need a complete overhaul. It's relatively cheap and easy, with a manual.

You should also count on servicing the water pump.

Once running, those are good little engines.

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

Update: Got it home.Evinrude MO-E40TLCEC SO-02276990. After fixing the fuel line, it started. I didn't run it for more than 20 sec or so. There's no pee hole, how do I make sure water is circulating? When I look to order the manual for it, I see a match for E40TLCE but not E40TLCEC. I would assume the last "C" stands for something, any ideas?

Since I am a real novice at outboards, I sure can't give you all the answers, but.....
I do have a 1986 VRO 40hp.
1. Mine does have a pee hole. If it isn't peeing, you have probably already answered your question about water circulating. It probably isn't.
2. Hopefully, you are running it in the water or on muffs. 20 to 30 seconds is supposedly long enough dry run time to destroy a water pump impeller.

Muffs, yes. I did notice some water exiting only when it revved up, out of the center two holes, high up on the shaft. Not very much water and not at idle. They look much bigger than next door, he has a 50hp VRO,mid 90's, it has a pee hole located slightly to one side.

I should be able to find out more tonight as I start the teardown, Book in hand. Too many things to fix at once!

Impeller due in Friday.

Free Boat? Haha I shoulda known better!

Chris

Its pee hole is locater under lower cowling, starbord side, looking from back of motor. In a black plug, size of a $. Probably stuffed by some spiders nest or so. You saw water leave thru iddle relief holes, exhaust leaves there when in water, creating backpressure in midsection. That it pumps water on muffs doesnt tell you it will in water, it is prefed by hose. Do the waterpump and carbs as DJ says. I'v got a 88 good reliable motors, I always liked them a lot.

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

One mystery solved, that hose was the telltale, it's about 1/2ID, run from a fitting on the side of the block. It was clogged, but no more. Now at idle I get a very steady stream. My concern now is if that hose is too big, it may reduce the pressure through the rest of the block. Any ideas, or am I worried for no reason.

Thanks again for all the help!

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

I have an '89 Johnson w/out a VRO & the tell tale does put out a pretty large stream. The I.D. is more like 1/4". If it is connected to the correct size fitting on the block, I don't think it should matter. It seems unlikely someone would replace it with the wrong size, but who knows.

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

The fitting on the block is rather small. Is there a thermostat which will open once warmed up, dropping pressure on the telltale? If so, once the carbs and fuel pump are taken care of, I should be able to get running long enough to check this. How long should it take to warm up? Should I then have warm water exiting the prop once it opens?

Sorry for so many questions, my first outboard, but not my outboard's first owner.

Chris

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

The prudent thing to do anyway is to replace the t-stat & water pump impeller anyway.
Water should also spit out the relief port under engine in back at idle.
I've never checked for hot water exiting, but it has to go somewhere. ;)
I'll try to check manual when I get home.

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

Stupid question: Next door neighbor kept pointing to a red lever on the side, sort of behind the carb. Is this another way to set the choke on the motor? he really didn't have a good explaination for it. What is it for, how does it work. Owners book not arrived yet.

Thanks

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

Still waiting on the kits, disconnected line between fuel pump and carbs, turned it over, squirt, squirt, fuel pump is fine. Decided to drain the carb bowls....... oh the smell of old gas, nothing like it. All kinds of gunk drained out.

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

Water exit at row of 6 holes above cav. plate at rear.
Red lever is manual primer valve. It should normally be left in the run position which is parellel to the unit. It allows the primer to squirt extra fuel to start engine when cold. It replaces the choke for cold starts.
The manuals will explain it all.

Re: Evinrude VRO 40hp

Thanks to all who replied, I now have a working outboard. I de-carbed today, in a tank. Water punp worked, gas pump worked, all the flies and mosquitoes headed for some one else's yard, I even got the power tilt to work!

I have the new impeller, but the old one works in the tank . So once I get closer to having a real boat to put in the water, I'll replece it. This motor may have to sit till the cashflow gets right.

Thanks so much for the help, you guys are the best!
