Hi there, just want to know if someone out there has abit of knowledge.Took the boat out the other day,ran fine, fished for awhile, went to go home and 1997 150 ocean pro died on me.Got towed home.Did a few tests, compression good, fuel lines all good, primer bulb good, pulse limiter good, tank vented, every thing checks out.Seems the oil side of VRO working just not the fuel side,Smokes real bad and dies out,but i can get it running if i squezze primer bulb.It runs fine if i run a tote tank above fuel pump and gravity feed.Sounds obvious.Question is will the oil side still run if the unserviceble check valves fail at the pulse intake.I am thinking of rebuilding VRO pump but the diaphrams look perfect.I have had a few VRO evinrudes and the check valves failed on some of them, although i could undo 5 screws and replace. This pump you cant.I dont want to repair if it wont work!!!So does the check valves fail and the oil side still work?????

Re: Evinrude VRO problem

The 1998 and later "VRO" pumps are completely rebuildable. They are recognized by having the plastic hose fittings secured by 2 Torx screws, o-rings. and an oval metal plate instead of looking like they were glued in place.

Older pumps can have the diaphragms replaced, but the housings were different internally than the '98 and later ones.

Hi,thanks for the reply. You can replace the diaphrams but not the check valves in the pulse fitting.I have had a 1990 40 hp evinrude vro that you could replace the check valves but on this 1997 150 ocean pro the check valves are under the pulse fitting with no way of getting to them. Will the oil side still work if the check valves are faulty.I sort of thought if the check valves failed the oil and fuel side would fail?My VRO pumps oil but not fuel.
