Evinrude VRO Question

I have twin 1997 200 HP Carb'd Ocean Pro's. I have replaced the VRO on one engine and now need to replace the VRO on the other engine. I borrowed a used VRO (Circa 1983) and it confirmed the need for a new VRO on my engine. I have heard that BRP has improved the new VRO's that they are producing. Does anyone know if this is true or should I save some $ and buy an after-market product? I see that the new production VRO is labeled VRO2. This Evinrude part seems to be very problematic. Is this a real issue or am I just boxing shadows? Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Evinrude VRO Question

You cannot buy an new VRO or VRO II pump anymore. All the pumps produced today are OMS (oil metering system) pumps. They are very good pumps and have better alarm systems than the older pumps.

BTW - most, if not all, of the horror stories you hear about the old VRO pumps are not true.

Re: Evinrude VRO Question

Thanks for the response. When I order the new VRO (or OMS) what will I be receiving? Is there a significant difference in these new parts? From the pictures I see on-line they look the same. I'm somewhat confused.

Re: Evinrude VRO Question

Not sure what you'd get on line but a new OMS pump has replaceable fittings and has 4 wires. If you did indeed have a VRO the fittings are not removable, all black and was a 3 wire pump.

Just as a thought, I'd be hard pressed to buy one on line and risk not getting the right thing AND not getting any warranty.

Re: Evinrude VRO Question

I completely agree with you regarding an on-line purchase. What I have seen is exactly as you have described - A pump and package of fittings and four wires with the plug on the end. Based on what you have said I will assume that BRP has improved upon the original VRO. When these engines are running well they are a true pleasure to own. Unfortunately owning 13 year old engines requires spending $ to keep them running well. What is the warranty on a new OMS purchased from an Evinrude dealer? Thanks for the advice.
